ENVIS - Madhya Pradesh

ENVIS-Madhya Pradesh located at Disaster Management Institute (DMI), Bhopal was established under EMCBTA project in November 2002, as ENVIS node, by Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), New Delhi.


Based on its performance, this node has been uplifted to ENVIS Center in July 2004. ENVIS-MP centre is working as per the guidelines of MoEFCC, New Delhi. Under ENVIS (Environmental Information System) we collect and analyze data relating to Environment for Madhya Pradesh State.


Long-Term Objectives

  • To build up a repository and dissemination centre in Environmental Science and Engineering;
  • To gear up state-of-the-art technologies of information acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information of environmental nature; and
  • To support and promote research, development and innovation in environmental information technology.

Short-Term Objectives

  1. To provide national environmental information service relevant to present needs and capable of development to meet the future needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of information;
  2. To build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities with the ultimate objectives of disseminating information speedily to the users;
  3. To promote, national and international cooperation and liaison for exchange of environment related information;
  4. To promote, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance environmental information processing and utilisation capabilities;
  5. To promote exchange of information amongst developing countries.

Disaster Management Institute (DMI)

The Disaster Management Institute (DMI) was set up in 1987 by the Government of Madhya Pradesh (GoMP) as an autonomous organization in the aftermath of the world’s worst ever industrial disaster in Bhopal. In homage to its victims, the establishment of DMI is a commitment to ensure that grim ‘Bhopal’ never recurs. 
DMI is now recognized as one of the premier Institute in the area of Disaster Management at National level.  Recognizing its capability, Govt. of India has planned to upgrade it as the National Institute in Industrial Safety (NIIS).

The principal objective of the institute is to evolve techniques for and enhance competence in prevention, preparedness, mitigation and management of natural as well as industrial disasters. Towards this end, the institute caters for the professional development and disaster management requirements of the government as well as public and private sectors. The institute offers both training courses and consultancy services on various facets of mitigation and management of disasters. The objectives of DMI, as enunciated in the Memorandum of Association, are as follows: -

  •              Train Govt. officials, executives of PSUs and private sector firms in various facets of Disaster Management.
  •             Carry out research on causes, effects etc. of disasters, management, and mitigation and on state-of-art techniques.
  •             Collect, store and effectively disseminate information regarding hazards and   disasters.
  •             Offer consultancy services to industry and others.
  •             Institute awards, medals scholarships and prizes to promote these objectives.
  •             Run post-graduate degree and diploma courses on Disaster Management and Industrial Safety. 

The ultimate objective of the Institute is to ‘prevent or mitigate the consequences of disasters and thereby benefit the general community’.
